Mr. Zizz began as a character illustration created by my wife, Christina, for a children’s book. He is the perfect character to bring to life in 3D and demonstrate the start-to-finish process of producing an animated short.
Zizz is a fully rigged and script-driven character. Facial animation is performed through a combination of blendshapes, bones, and other deformers driven by a facial rig. Water dynamics are scripted to react to the depressions and footsteps on the lily pad. Zizz is rendered using MentalRay in passes including subsurface scattering, ambient occlusion, global illumination, and final gathering. Final compositing and FX work are done in After Effects.
The design firm Moxie hired me to produce dozens of stylized 3d renders for Noosh’s website rebuild. Attention to detail in the shadows and reflections were key in the renderings of these elements, which were added as overlays on white page backgrounds.
Created a 3D rendered logo to be used with Yahoo’s Messenger service.
Previsuals created for a collaboration between Cisco Systems and the Miami Dolphins
Created normal maps, lighting, and optimized polycount for development of real-time scanning technology.
Concepts, branding, and design — created a 3D intro video for 32k Studios' video games.
3D renderings of Yup Brands B-Up and B-Jammin bars made for Web and Print. Over 20 wrappers were created for US and French Canadian brands.
Created and rendered 3D elements for Sigma Designs website redesign. Delivered approximately 50 renders to compliment the look and feel of their redesign. This project required a major emphasis on lights, reflections, and shadows to push the key details.
Developed a series of 3D renderings used in a QLP team-building event. While animating the chessboard, I needed to choreograph the movement in sync with the music. Delivered the 3D sequences for final editing and compositing.
The chess metaphor illustrated the coordination of teamwork, strategy, process, and quality — leading to a successful outcome.
This was one of the more challenging projects I've worked on. All artwork and assets were storyboarded, drafted for client approval, drawn, then animated. The work required 2D and 3D artwork, 2.5D camera moves, lively line work, depth, scripted particles, and more. Every aspect of the presentation required close attention to the science and technology behind desalination and reverse osmosis.
